Dr. Hernandez graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College in 1989 and went on to earn a Master's degree in English and comparative literature from Columbia University and a doctorate in education. She is married to Bruce Bayliss who was Headmaster of a private school in Portland, Oregon. They have two children, ages 11 and 5, and two golden retrievers and a Gordon setter. The family lives in Weybridge, Vermont.
