Susan Kalla is a local artist in Riverside who has shown her work in Greenwich, New York City and the greater Washington, DC area. She was featured at the Benheim Gallery in Greenwich, Arts-on-the-Avenue, a solo show at the Greenwich Hospital Cafe, and private galleries in Soho, Georgetown, Bethesda and Bethany Beach.
About the Pool Series
"Swimming pools are cool havens from the scorching heat where you can see diamonds on the water reflecting crystal clear skies. Greenwich is dotted with these beautiful oases ranging from the enormous pool at the Innis Arden Country Club to the funky one at Byram Beach that has breathtaking beauty overlooking the Sound, " said the Artist.

"Pools have endless variety. The seaside pools look out on the infinite sweep of the ocean with sandy beaches ending in rocky cliffs. Country club pools are amusement parks with diving boards, water sports and refreshments. And private estate pools have lush gardens landscaped within an inch of their lives. The pool can make you weightless, free your spirit and offer solitude," explained Kalla.

Michele KraussPaint hurdles across the canvas as Michele Krauss flicks long, thin lines over various backdrops. The brushstrokes, uneven and frenzied, inject movement into the works. In some, a collision of colors circle and loop over background characters. Krauss layers these quick lines into a textured expression of passion. In others, the swirls of lines themselves form the central image. Many of her paintings, however, are abstract representations of landscapes. These paintings feature blocks of blue that could be interpreted variously as ocean and sky. Extraordinary portrayals of figures and landscapes all find their way into this dynamic, refreshing and uncompromising collection. From simple planes expressing the pure, clean beauty of ocean to a collision of colors that trigger raw feelings of passion and desire, the use of rich color and texture evoke the rhythms of natural forces and emotions, bridging the gap between figure and landscape.

Wound up on top of the horizon line is always another line that refers to hope, as well as the tangibility of emotions and ideas. Although the colors are bright, they are soft and inviting. The colors meld together until they exude an atmospheric glow. Each painting creates a visual euphoria. Perhaps Michele Krauss' paintings are so full of movement because the artist herself has spent her life moving from Chile to various cities in the United States and Europe. Today, her paintings are held in private collections worldwide.

JAKE RAJS: PHOTOGRAPHY

Jake Rajs: Photography

Showing from January 16th, 2009 to March 15th, 2009.

Artist Reception on February 8th, 2009 at 3 PM

Though he had toyed with other media, such as painting and sculpture, and even identified himself as a poet for a while, there was another form of creative expression out there for Jake Rajs. "I saw a book of poems and photographs, and thought 'what a great idea.' So I got myself a camera. The poetry wasn't as good as the photography. I found I could say it better without words. Artists use a different vehicle to express themselves. For me, it's the camera."
